R. E. Lee Jr. High '62-'63

In 1962, eighth graders from across the city entered Robert E. Lee Jr. High School.  The building on Park Avenue was the former E. C. Glass High School (new building opened on Memorial Avenue in 1953) and Robert E. Lee Elementary School.  The building was located across the street from Sunbeam Bakery (remember that wonderful aroma of baking bread), Whitten Funeral Home, and next to the city filtration plant.  The school had a small indoor gym (remember running laps above the gym floor.)  An off-site basketball court was a few blocks away.

We either walked to school, had family members drive us, or rode public transportation.  There were no yellow school buses in the city then.
