Stephen Steve Hooten

Stephen "Steve" Gibson Hooten, 65, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wed., May 1, 2013, after a lengthy battle with cancer.  Steve, a native of Lynchburg, was born on January 13, 1948, to the late Dr. William Samuel Hooten and the late Margaret Travis Hooten Rundle.  He was the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Claude Hooten and the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Travis.  Steve was on the Cradle Roll of Rivermont Presbyterian Church and attended Garland-Rhodes Elementary School and E.C. Glass High School.  He was an avid sports enthusiast and played football, basketball, ran track and threw the discus for Glass.  He was part of the 1967 State Champion Basketball Team. He was a scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  He went to Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, North Carolina on a football scholarship.  Later, he attended Campbell College in Buie's Creek, North Carolina.  Stephen enjoyed life and will leave behind many friends and loved ones including his wife of 38 years, Brenda James Hooten; two cherished daughters, Courtney Hooten Stevens and Anna Margaret Hooten Humphries; two beloved sons-in-law, Matthew Stevens and Christopher Humphries; nine precious grandchildren, Mary, Samuel, Elizabeth, Lydia, John, Abigail and Thomas Stevens and William and Ella Humphries.  He leaves behind also a sister, Mrs. Janet Coffey (Michael); two brothers, Bill Hooten (Jo), and John T. Hooten; and a number of nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2424 Rivermont Avenue 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2013.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, 200 West Liberty Springs, Cross Hill, SC 29332 or to Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2424 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503.
