Susan Scott Barker of Mt. Holly, N.C., passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, after a brief illness.  She was the daughter of Frank and Barbara Scott, both deceased.  Susan graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1967 and Phillips Business College in 1969.  She worked in the offices of Babcock and Wilcox until 1975, when she moved to Charlotte, N.C.  A gifted reader as a child, she was often called upon to read aloud to her classmates and younger children at Brookville Elementary School, her calm and expressive voice a comfort to the growing baby boomer classes of her childhood. Those skills were used many years later when she began working for the Gaston Literacy Council in Gaston, N.C., where she helped others learn to read and find employment.  She is survived by her husband, Robert Barker of Mt. Holly, N.C; a daughter, Trisha Barker of Belmont, N.C.; a son, Brian Barker of Mt. Holly, N.C.; two grandsons, Bailey and Carson Barker; three brothers, Gary Scott of Roanoke, Rick Scott of Lynchburg and Bill Scott of Wilmington, N.C.  The Reverend Bart Edwards of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church conducted a private service at Spring Hill Cemetery.  Memorial gifts may be made to Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. Diuguid Funeral Service, Wiggington Chapel, assisted the family.
