Dexter Eugene Overstreet, “Big Dog Dexter” 59, of Rustburg, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Lynchburg General Hospital.  He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Sharon Cowling Overstreet.  Born July 7, 1949, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Winston Bethel Overstreet and Viola McBride Overstreet of Lynchburg.  He was employed at Securitas Security and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 16.  In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a sister, Delores Helms, her husband, Terry, and their son, Gabriel; a brother, Leon B. Overstreet and companion, Pam Wieringo; a daughter, Marilyn Hamilton and husband, Robert Jr.; a son, John Schwalb; a grandson, Ricky Gammon Jr. and wife, Megan; two granddaughters, Shauna Gammon and Amanda Croghan and husband, Adam; a great-grandson, Christopher Croghan; two great-granddaughters, Korrine Gammon and Sophia Croghan; and three nieces, Carol Overstreet, Shannon Fisher and Kim McFadden.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Morgan Chewning. Interment, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16, will follow in Staunton Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mountain Lake.  The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, prior to the service, at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to your local humane society.  Whitten Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Timberlake Chapel, (434) 239-0331 is assisting the family with arrangements.
