Robert Harry Alvis III, 66, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 at his home.  Harry courageously battled a neuromuscular disease for many years, but succumbed to cancer.  Harry was a graduate of Lynchburg College.  He enjoyed careers as a Builder, Realtor, and professional photographer.  Harry was born October 5, 1948, in Lynchburg, Va.  He is survived by his loved and devoted wife, Merle Talley Alvis; his son, Robert H. Alvis IV "Bob"; two special granddaughters, Anna Elizabeth Alvis and Kathryn Isabell Alvis "Katie"; sisters-in-law, Dale T. Morris and Ann T. Reid (Don); niece, Lisa Hankla; and nephews, Al Hankla, Allen Morris, Tim Reid, Andrew Reid, and Michael Reid.  Harry was predeceased by his parents, Roberts Harry Alvis Jr. and Ann McKenna Alvis; and by sister-in-law, June T. Hankla.  Harry often said "any day you don't learn something new is a wasted day."  He used every opportunity to instill a "yearning for learning" in Anna and Katie, who considered him their special homework helper.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.  A celebration of Harry's life will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home, with the Reverend Janet Hawkins officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Harry to The Alan B.
