Michael Douglas "Mike" Wood

Michael Douglas "Mike" Wood, 76, of Forest passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on Monday, July 7, 2025, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband of Nancy Hamilton Wood for 38 years.

Born on September 15, 1948, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Claude Arthur Wood, Sr. and Elsie Maddox Wood.

Mike was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a retired engineer with Bell Atlantic Telephone Company with 31 years of service and a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Mike was a loving father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He was a lifetime avid hunter who enjoyed the outdoors including fishing and playing golf as a member of Ivy Hill Golf Course. He was a taxidermist, a handyman of all trades especially woodworking and a perfectionist when fixing things. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory four children, Sherri Ann Wood Mumaw and husband, Daryl "JR", of Edinburg, Dorian Michelle Chelland and husband, William "Billy", of Auburndale, Fla,, K. Dean Bailey and wife, Susan, of Amherst, and Angela Bailey Lamb and husband, George, of Louisville, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Taylor Chelland, Travis Chelland, and Michael Chelland, Kyra Gustwick and husband, Cody, Cheyenne Bailey, Sarah Lamb and William Lamb; a brother, C. Arthur Wood, Jr. and wife, Joy, of Arizona; a nephew, C. Arthur Wood III; and many other relatives and friends.

The family would like to give their sincere heartfelt thanks to the staff of the CardioThoracic Intensive Care Unit for their very loving care and support.

Family and friends are invited to a Day of Remembering Mike and his love of hunting and chocolate at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Ivy Hill Golf Course Pavilion.
