Ronald Ron Peters

Ronald Preston Peters

Ronald Preston Peters, 71, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 in Lynchburg. Born June 1, 1949 in Lynchburg, Ron was the second youngest child of Clyde Owen Peters and Earnestine Helen Peters.

Ron graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1967 and from Virginia Tech in 1971 with a B.S. in Business Management. He was also a proud member of the Theta Chi fraternity. Ron worked for Burroughs Corporation in sales from 1971 to 1989, and then for Dominion Graphics until his retirement in 2010.

Ron grew up on Yancy Street in Lynchburg and spent his childhood playing with his siblings and neighbors in and around Rivermont Avenue. Ron and his brother Tom spent summers working at Eagle Eyrie and were Wiffle ball champions in their neighborhood. Ron was a sports nut. He loved watching sports, coaching sports, and talking about all things sports. He loved NASCAR, his Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers and his beloved Virginia Tech Hokies. He was a true Hokie through and through and never missed the opportunity to “watch” a game through his radio. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching classic comedy movies, telling stories, listening to music, doing crossword puzzles (in pen), and completing sudoku and jigsaw puzzles. Ron spent many years with Lynchburg Little League baseball, both as a coach and in administration.

Most recently, he was a big part of the E.C. Glass’s class of 1967 50th reunion committee and loved reuniting and reminiscing with former classmates. He was early for any engagement, even while driving 5 below the speed limit. Ron was the life of the party and was always laughing. Ron never met a stranger and would often give rides to people he didn’t know. His dance skills were also well-known. He was known to clear the dance floor at many fraternity parties that he gladly helped arranged.

Ron was known to many as Dad, PopPop, Ronnie, brother, son, Coach Ron/Coach Peters, mentor, and friend. Ron will be remembered for his laugh, one liners of advice, his fairness, and his commitment to his community and what’s right for all people.

Ron is survived by his three children, Laurie Peters Tucker (Timothy Tucker), Helen (Lindsey) Peters, and John Michael Peters (Anne Peters); grandchildren Layla Hope Peters, Hayley Noelle Tucker, and Owen Samuel Tucker; siblings Larry Peters, Ellen Feagan, and Roger Peters; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; as well as good friend and fishing buddy, George Nash. Ron is predeceased by his parents, Owen and Helen Peters, his brother Thomas Peters, and by the mother of his children, Janet Thompson Schleicher.
